My name is Helen Howard-Edwards.  I have lived and worked in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago for many years.   Five years ago I became involved with the S.M.A.R.T. program.  I had reached a point in my life where I was compelled to give back and to make a difference in a tangible way. 

As Gods Plan for me began to unfold, I was moved to accomplish works that I never could have imagined were possible.  Since then I have become involved in a sundry of other service projects in Central America, and whenever a new opportunity presents itself to me, I find myself anxious to jump in.

The need in these developing countries is so great that it almost overwhelms me, but then I come face to face with the individual people and they renew my spirit.  They are so full of thanks for the few services that we can offer to them, that I am overcome by their humble appreciation. 

I found that as I gave of myself, I became an example for my co-workers, friends, family and community.  They were inspired to begin their own journey of giving and doing.  This process enriches each day of my life and I want to thank everyone for their ceaseless financial, emotional, physical and spiritual support.  

Participating on trips is both difficult and rewarding work that is life changing.  Over the years I have had many memorable and everlasting experiences with friends both old and new.  It has been an adventure filled with a myriad of emotions from fun and laughter to sadness and grief.  The life affirming commitment that others have made demonstrates that change is accomplished one step at a time.
