Association of Nurse Anesthetists
The Resource
Directory of Volunteer Anesthesia Service Opportunities in the
United States and Overseas has been developed by the Council
for Public Interest in Anesthesia (CPIA) in response to
increased interest in volunteer anesthesia services by CRNAs.
It is offered as a resource for individuals interested in
giving of their time and professional skills to those in need,
both throughout the United States and the world.
The Directory provides basic information on the 29
organizations. This publication is not intended to represent
the entirety of volunteer opportunities available for CRNAs.
Volunteer anesthesia opportunities for CRNAs are many and
varied. The organizations listed have service times that vary
from one year to two weeks. Opportunities exist for service
and teaching or a combination of both. The emphasis of the
organizations varies from strictly humanitarian to those with
significant religious emphasis. The need for volunteers exists
in the United States as well as around the globe. Volunteer
anesthetists, regardless of where and how they serve, can have
a significant impact on the lives of people who will benefit
from either their teaching skills or direct patient care
services.
A number of years ago, the Council for Public Interest in
Anesthesia established an informational program in the area of
volunteer anesthesia services. The Council has been
instrumental in promoting a number of activities in support of
volunteer anesthesia services, in addition to publication of a
resource Directory. These activities include: maintaining a
list of CRNAs who do provide volunteer services; sponsorship
of educational workshops on the subject; and maintaining a
liaison with Health Volunteer Overseas/Nurse Anesthesia
Overseas Division. Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) is an
international health volunteer organization engaged in
teaching and service programs for local health care providers
in various specialties. An HVO Division of Nurse Anesthesia
Overseas has been established with the sponsorship and support
of the Council for Public Interest in Anesthesia and the
American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA). The goal of
the Nurse Anesthesia Division is to establish training
programs to teach anesthesia skills to healthcare providers in
various regions of the world. The Council wishes to encourage
all CRNAs, with or without formal teaching preparation, to
consider participation in the Nurse Anesthesia Overseas
training programs. Imparting knowledge about anesthesia to
local providers in various areas of the world leaves a lasting
legacy.
Volunteer anesthesia service, regardless of the type and
location, is one of the rewarding experiences of a
professional's career. The Council hopes that this Directory
will assist the CRNAs who are seeking volunteer service
opportunities and better enable them to identify an
organization that will meet their respective needs and goals.
